Rightful Owners

This is a story for Friday Fictioneers, which is hosted by Rochelle. Every week you are challenged to write a 100 word story based on a photo.

Thanks to Yarnspinnerr for this week’s photo and also to Rochelle for hosting the challenge.

Thanks to all the readers for their time, too.

The house was building happy memories for its owners. Men sat in the veranda — chatting, playing cards. Women were inside the kitchen — chopping, cooking and talking. The battalion of children ransacked the entire house. The air smelled of heat, sweat and dust along with a hint of cooking spices, mint and coriander.

One day people, mostly neighbours, came. With faces drenched in anger, their words sounded terrifying. Nights passed in deathly silence.

Then — one night, a strong fire attacked the house from outside.

Inside, voices cried… Help! Help!

The land is claimed and tamed but not by its rightful owners.
